We use numbers every day – at work, at home, in the shops and even at the pub! This course will help you get to grips with key whole number skills.
It concentrates on five important areas: putting numbers in order, writing numbers as words and as figures, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, checking numbers and solving problems.
The course begins by looking at ‘place value’ and shows you how to order digits into tens, hundreds and thousands. You’ll learn new techniques to help you add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers - whether you need to crunch the numbers in your head or work it out on paper, you’ll learn how to do the calculations quickly and accurately. And you’ll see how estimating and rounding can help you to work out a rough answer and give you a good idea if your answer is right.
As you move through the course, mini tests let you check that you’ve understood the learning and give you the chance to practise your new number skills in realistic, everyday situations.
After finishing this course you will be able to:
• Write numbers as figures and as words
• Put numbers in order
• Count in tens and hundreds
• Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
• Round numbers up and down
• Use estimates to give answers or check calculations
• Solve everyday number problems
The staff at your local learndirect centre will assess your skills. Once they have assessed your skills, they will help you to decide if this is the right course for you.
