Words are all around us – from newspaper stories to bills, letters to road signs, emails to adverts. This course will help you to brush up on the key reading skills that you use every day.
It focuses on four important areas: reading everyday texts, understanding instructions and explanations, filling out forms and different ways of reading.
You’ll learn how to spot clues to help you understand the meaning of a text. You’ll see how tools like chapters and an index can help you to find the information you need quickly and easily. You’ll discover how lists, bullet points, titles and sub-headings can help you when you read instructions and explanations. And you’ll be shown how and when to use different reading skills like scanning and skimming.
As you move through the course, mini tests let you check that you’ve understood the learning and give you the chance to practise your new reading skills in realistic, everyday situations.
After finishing this course you will be able to:
• Understand the main points of a text
• Identify why a text was written and what it wants you to do
• Read and understand instructions and explanations
• Fill out forms to do with work, money and your personal life
• Use different reading methods like skimming, scanning and detailed reading
The staff at your local learndirect centre will assess your skills. Once they have assessed your skills, they will help you to decide if this is the right course for you
